Battery late than never

The world of automotive, like many others, has been profoundly affected by COVID-19. But the automotive sector was already undergoing a period of unprecedented change in how, where, and what consumers want to buy. Electric vehicles are rapidly growing in popularity – but the barriers to conversion remain significant and require innovation from leasing companies, OEMs and subscription companies. Separately the move to purchase of cars online promises huge opportunities and threats. This 2021 Speedometer is a follow-up to our 2019 report and asks six core questions for the consumer, and what that means for players:

  1. Do consumers still want to own a car?
  2. Do consumers still want exclusive use of a car?
  3. How do consumers want to find and purchase their next car?
  4. What do they want to buy?
  5. How do they want to pay?
  6. What about after they have bought it?

This Speedometer reviews what has changed, lays out what the resulting opportunities and risks are, and asks what industry participants need to do in order to develop a sustainable competitive advantage in a quickly evolving world.

If you would like to discuss any of the themes covered in the Speedometer we’d be delighted to talk.
